2024 Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay

Beechworth, VIC

A little fuller in colour than previous vintages showing the impacts of the low yield, still has a lovely pale yellow/green colour. Fermented in 100% French oak, mostly 500L puncheons, ripe grapefruit lift with bran meal and toast notes from the wild ferment and extended lees contact. The crisp acidity and balanced alcohol make for quite a zesty mouth feel. Grapefruit pith and rock melon carry through for a long finish.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Whole bunch pressing, wild ferment in 100% new French oak, mostly 500L puncheons, and has come together in spectacular fashion. The wine was fermented in 39 % new French oak and the balance older, from a variety of cooperages.
Winemaker Comments
Beechworth is simply one of Australia’s finest regions for Chardonnay. The Indigo Vineyard has different soils, aspect, clones and vine age. Above-average rainfall throughout 2023 made for another challenging growing season, with a major frost event in late October significantly reducing yield; Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were especially impacted, with some blocks reduced by as much as 75%. Indigo received over 100mm in both October and December, which gave us a vigorous canopy and somewhat compensated for the canopy damage caused by the frost. Thankfully, the rain cleared for January, and the low yields ensured rapid ripening. Picking commenced on the 12th of February, and the fruit was in good condition, albeit in small quantity. Historically, this wine has been sourced predominantly from the Mendoza clone but due to the impact of the frost, this wine is mainly from the Bernard 95 clone.
Food Pairing
Richer seafood and light meats, classic roast chicken is perfect.
Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
