2024 Oakey Creek Vineyard Semillon

2024 Oakey Creek Vineyard Semillon
NEW RELEASE

Hunter Valley, NSW

At 21 months of age on release, this wine still has a luminous pale green colour with pale yellow tints. A fragrant nose of lemongrass and orange citrus blossom, typical of young Hunter Semillon. Beautiful fruit weight, with Tahitian lime flavours complemented by a juicy acid line that keeps the flavour lingering. A wine that is drinking well now but will only build in complexity if given time.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to French oak barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approximately 36% new oak and bottled in September 2024.
Winemaker Comments
Our first single vineyard release from the Oakey Creek Vineyard since we purchased this 40Ha property in mid-2021 from the Drayton family. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the heart of the Flat block which has provided the lion share of our Hunter Valley Semillon for over three decades. 2023 was a much drier year than the previous three across Eastern Australia. Throughout the Hunter, yields across all varieties were lower than average. The preceding three wet winters (2020, 2021, 2022) and a historically dry 2023 winter all took their toll on vine health and yield. Coming into the new year, fruit condition and canopy was excellent, though tracking 14-21 days earlier than last year due to the lighter crop. Early January was incredibly hot and humid. We picked our first Semillon on January 12th, 2024, and the last arrived in the winery by January 21st. It was a condensed harvest, and whilst yields were low, the quality was excellent, with good flavour and natural chemistry.
