2023 Verona Vineyard Shiraz
HALLIDAY 97 POINTS
Hunter Valley, NSW
Lovely depth of colour along with purple tints due to the slightly riper fruit. Verona Vineyard Shiraz is always characterised by the soft sweet plum pastille fruit note. This carries to the palate with complimentary French oak in the background. Fine ripe tannins add to the fruit density, with some liquorice notes and a persistent after taste. A great Shiraz to age for many years.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Processing started with a 3-4 day cold soaking and then a 4-5 day
ferment at 24-26C. The vineyard is on heavy clay, similar to the Graveyard Vineyard but the southerly aspect gives a more floral
character. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak, all
one- and two-years old.
Winemaker Comments
The Verona Vineyard is across the road from our Graveyard Vineyard and has been under Brokenwood’s care for the past 18 years. First planted in 1968 on a gentle south-facing slope, with subsequent
plantings in 2002, the original cuttings are from old vineyards in the region. This is the ninth bottling of Verona as a Single Vineyard wine.
Our third consecutive wet year, La Niña continued to make herself known through the first three quarters of 2022, with widespread floods again experienced across South Eastern Australia. Up to the 31st of
December 2022, we received 1365.5mm of rain with 97 rainy days at Brokenwood. Pokolbin reached its annual rainfall by the end of June, with 2022 being the wettest year that we have had on record. The start of the growing season was particularly challenging with vineyard access and Downy Mildew pressure a constant issue. These issues resulted in very low yields. Thankfully, the weather cleared up in late October. Fruit condition and canopy were excellent despite the cool summer. This resulted in one of the latest harvests on record,
resulting in near perfect tannin ripeness. The old vine blocks were picked between the 17th and the 20th of February under clear skies in pristine condition.
Food Pairing
Osso bucco, steak, lamb and cheese.
Drink
