2021 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

2021 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

Hunter Valley, NSW

Excellent green tints on a pale yellow background. Coming from a cool year the aromas are more grapefruit and stone fruit than tropical. Fine white cashew oak compliments the lees complexity on both aroma and palate. White peach flavours and citrus supported by perfect acidity. A long and fine finish.

Wine Profile
Ratings
95 points - Halliday Wine Companion 2023. Home turf. Top of the tree, or very close to it. There is almost a grating intensity to the fruit of so many '21's in the hunter. Here, an exercise in how to sooth, calm and placate it, with an optimal picking window and the assiduous use of oak and lees, following an ambient fermentation. A clay site, embellishing flavour and texture. Very impressive. Age for a few year and tuck in. Drink 2022-2030. Ned Goodwin MW
Vinification
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and then loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approximately 30% new oak and bottled in September 2021.
Winemaker Comments
A complete turnaround from the last four dry years in the Hunter, with a firm La Nina cycle making for a wet season. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of October and we ended up receiving 1030mm for 2020. It is difficult to recall a year where we have been closer to the edge of disaster in the Hunter Valley, with the prospect of not picking either whites or reds becoming a real possibility with a few more wet days in late December. Thankfully the sun came out and we were able to pick all of our Semillon in pristine condition. Needless to say, all of our Semillon was in the winery in great condition by the end of January. The Maxwell Vineyard was planted in the early 70s and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years. We still receive many enquiries about our Graveyard Vineyard Chardonnay, last made in 2004, so we continue the tradition of a single vineyard Hunter Valley Chardonnay.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pork and richer Asian dishes.
Drink
Drinking well now and will evolve further over the medium term.
