2019 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz

McLaren Vale, SA

"Crushed and chilled thence to the Hunter Valley via tanker, 36 hours deluxe cold soak. Completed the end of fermentation in barrel, the colour deep. The bouquet and palate use different mediums to convey an eerily similar blend of plum, vanilla bean and dark chocolate, framed by cedary oak."

96 points - Halliday Wine Companion 2023. Deep colour. The bouquet and palate use difference mediums to convey an eerily similar blend of plum, vanilla bean and dark chocolate, framed by cedary oak. Drink 2022-2034. James Halliday
Vinification
Crushed and chilled to tanker in McLaren Vale and then in the Hunter Valley within 36 hours, static 5 tonne fermenters and pumped over twice per day. Pressed to oak just before the end of fermentation. This wine has been matured in 100% French oak, and the largest parcel in a new 2,800 litre Francois cask.
Winemaker Comments
Previously made between 1993 and 2007, the Shiraz grapes for this wine are not from the 1950 plantings but from a block right next-door and planted in the early 1990s. A feature of the vineyard, which is just outside the town of McLaren Vale in South Australia, is the deep sand over clay soils. A dry lead up the 2019 harvest through spring and over the 18/19 summer, resulting in lower crops and rapid ripening. Things really sped up with the heat in late February. Luckily, both of our Shiraz vineyards are on deep sand over clay and held up well, in bottle at 14.5% alcohol.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with beef fillet and osso bucco.
Drink
Drinking well now in its youth but will develop into a lovely mature dry red over medium to long term cellaring.
