2019 7 Acre Shiraz

2019 7 Acre Shiraz

Hunter Valley, NSW

Medium density colour; the nose and entry on the palate is very much Hunter Valley with red fruit, plums, earthy sweet and slight iodine combined with soft fine tannins. Matured in large format French oak – mainly puncheons with approximately 10% new oak. An elegant, medium bodied Shiraz that will reward cellaring over the next 10 years.

Wine Profile
Processing started with 3-4 day cold soaking, then a 4-5 day ferment at 24-26C. The vineyard is on dark clay soil and gives a more floral character than those in red soils. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French, with only 9% being in new oak.
Winemaker Comments
The ‘7 Acre’ Block was planted in 1968 with Shiraz sourced from old Hunter vineyards. The Hunter Valley enjoyed another stress-free vintage in 2018. Low rainfall throughout 2017 meant low foliage and the harvest was saved by 210mm of rain over November to December 2017. A near perfect ripening period followed in late January/early February resulting in perfectly mature tannins and fruit in perfect condition at harvest. The Hunter Valley went back to its typical dry winter with no significant rain recorded between July and September. Brokenwood recorded 254mm from October to the end of December and then the tap was turned off. One of the driest Januarys on record coupled with milder maximum temperatures resulted in perfectly ripe Shiraz. Most of our Shiraz was harvested before the rain that came on Valentine’s Day. Handpicking this fruit has resulted in fine, fragrant Shiraz.
