2017 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay Image

2017 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

Hunter Valley, NSW

A touch more depth of colour from the sun and has excellent green tints. Tropical fruit lift, grapefruit and bran meal oak on the aroma. A generous palate, showing similar tropical notes and a soft acid finish. A very approachable wine that offers great enjoyment.

Wine Profile
GOLD - 2018 Hunter Valley Wine Show
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and then loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approximately 30% new oak and bottled in December 2017.
Winemaker Comments
The Hunter Valley does have a long history of wet years followed immediately by scorchers; 2004 and 2005 for instance and then there are 2 or 3 wet years followed by drought. The lead up to January 2017 was almost identical to the 1991 vintage. The years 1988, 1989 and January of 1990 were extremely wet and then the tap was turned off from February onwards, making 1990 one of the driest on record. Vintage 2017 in the Hunter Valley will be remembered for the 35 days above 30C in January and February. Soil moisture held up nicely and the Semillon’s are exceptional, as are the region’s Chardonnays. The Maxwell Vineyard was planted in the early 70s and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years. We get many enquiries about our Graveyard Vineyard Chardonnay, last made in 2004, so we thought it time to return to a Hunter Chardonnay.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pork and rich Asian dishes.
Drinking well now and will evolve further over the medium term.
