2012 Quail Shiraz 1.5L
McLaren Vale, SA & Hunter Valley, NSW
A young vibrant colour is certainly the initial highlight. As the Shiraz fruit from the Graveyard Vineyard just fell short of icon status we had no hesitation in using that parcel for this wine, the 2012 Quail. A slightly higher percentage of McLaren Vale sees more of the dark chocolate characters with underlying Hunter savouriness and bramble notes. Very much a medium bodied Shiraz at 13% alcohol. Some blue fruit flavours and background mocha oak flavours matched with ripe tannins. As always with Quail (and HBA for that matter) the sum is greater than the parts.

Winemaker Comments
Normality was restored with the weather for the southern states
and the only glitch for 2012 was the low crops. In fact overall tonnes
in McLaren Vale were down by 30% on 2011. As such the wines
definitely have ‘power’.
For the Hunter Valley, the winter of 2011 saw more consistent rain
than previous years with each month from April 2011 getting above
60mm and June just on 120mm. Rain in the last 3 months was 310mm
so quite a wet spring and start to the growing season.
Sadly once the rain started on 27th January, it didn’t let up. A major
effort in the vineyard meant we picked 70t of Shiraz.
Food Pairing
Lamb, veal and pasta.
Production
For the Graveyard a 4 day cold soak, 5 day ferment in 2 tonne
fermenters, malolactic fermentation in new French oak. For the
Wade Block 2 fermentation takes place in roto red fermenters over a
6 day period. Malolactic fermentation also takes place. The wine is
matured in new American oak.
Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
