2022 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

2022 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

Hunter Valley, NSW

Excellent green tints on a pale yellow background. Coming from a cool year the aromas are more grapefruit than tropical. Fine white cashew notes from the French oak compliments the lees complexity on both aroma and palate. White stone fruit flavours and citrus supported by fine, long acidity.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and then loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approximately 40% new oak and bottled in August 2022.
Winemaker Comments
A season with many similarities to 2021 but overall of higher quality. La Nina once again made for a cool, wet season albeit tempered by consistent breeze, which kept the canopy dry and disease at bay. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of November, with it being the wettest November on record. We ended up receiving 956mm for 2021. One of the latest harvests in the Hunter in many years, with the last Chardonnay not being picked until the 30th of January. Picking was conducted under cool, cloudy skies. The Maxwell Vineyard was planted in the early 70s and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years. We still receive many enquiries about our Graveyard Vineyard Chardonnay, last made in 2004, so we continue the tradition of a single vineyard Hunter Valley Chardonnay.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pork and richer Asian dishes.
Drink
Drinking well now and will evolve further over the medium term.
