2021 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz
Hunter Valley, NSW
Bright mid-density colour with purple hues just adding to the appeal. The use of large format French oak allows the red spice and bramble fruit of Hunter Shiraz to shine. Initial palate is very supple and complete, giving a lovely flow from start to finish. The importance of acidity can never be underestimated as this underpins the structure and carry. A classic, medium weight Hunter Valley Shiraz with fine long tannins with persistent length. A wine that will only build with time.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Processing started with a 3 day cold soak, then a 5-6 day ferment at 24-26C. The vineyard is on heavy clay soil which gives great fruit concentration with tannin structure and direction. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak puncheons, with 16% being new.
Winemaker Comments
With no release in 2020, we welcome back the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the 34th release.
For Hunter Valley grape growers, pre-vintage discussion is all about the weather. A complete turnaround from the previous four dry years in the Hunter, with a firm La Nina cycle making for a wet season.
Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of October and we ended up receiving 1030mm for 2020. It is difficult to recall a year where we have been closer to the edge of disaster in the Hunter Valley, with the prospect of not picking either whites or reds becoming a real possibility with a few more wet days in late December.
Thankfully the sun came out and the old vines of Graveyard were harvested on the 20th of February, resulting in fine, fragrant Shiraz.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with Osso bucco or slow roasted lamb shoulder.
Drink
Will improve beautifully with further bottle age.
