There are moments in the wine industry that feel especially meaningful, and this year’s Hunter Valley Legends Awards was certainly one of them for all of us at Brokenwood Wines.

We are incredibly proud to share that our Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern, has been named the 2026 Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year. It marks Stuart’s third win (winning the award in 2018, 2024 & now 2026) and reflects not only his dedication to Brokenwood, but also his ongoing commitment to championing the Hunter Valley wine industry as a whole.

For 17 vintages at Brokenwood, Stuart has helped shape the evolution of our wines with a focus on purity, balance and elegance. Under his leadership, Brokenwood has continued to receive recognition on both national and international stages, including Halliday Wine Companion 2026 Winery of the Year, multiple major wine show trophies and continued acclaim for our Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz.

What makes this award particularly special is that it recognises more than winemaking alone. The Hunter Valley Legends Awards celebrate individuals who contribute to the broader success and reputation of the region through leadership, mentorship and industry advocacy.

In an especially proud moment for the Hordern family, Stuart’s father, John Hordern, was also inducted as a 2026 Hunter Valley Wine Industry Living Legend in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the Upper Hunter wine industry.

Raised in the Upper Hunter, John’s connection to wine began when his father planted Semillon and Shiraz on the family property near Denman in 1968. Following studies at Roseworthy Agricultural College, John established Horseshoe Vineyard as a premium Hunter Valley wine label and built extensive experience through contract winemaking and vineyard operations. In 2000, he helped establish Hunter Wine Services in Muswellbrook. John has also held leadership roles including President of the Upper Hunter Winemakers Association and contributed to regional advisory committees supporting the wine industry.
