2021 Maragle Vineyard Chardonnay

2021 Maragle Vineyard Chardonnay

Tumbarumba, NSW

Careful winemaking has resulted in a perfect green tinted yellow colour. Excellent complexity on the nose and palate after pressing whole bunches and a wild ferment in barrel. Roasted cashew notes from the fine French oak compliment the white peach and grapefruit characters. A fine and delicate Chardonnay that will evolve over the next few years.

Wine Profile
Ratings
94 points - Halliday Wine Companion 2023. Delicate and powdery of texture, with an altitudinal thrust of sour stone fruits. Pithy and nicely edgy. The finish, long and pliant. A gently creamy nougat note. The least intricate of this fine suite, perhaps, but no less poised, intense or impressive. Drink 2021-2028. Ned Goodwin MW
Winemaker Comments
Ian and Lise Bell’s Maragle Vineyard was planted in 1994, south east of the town of Tumbarumba in the foothills of the NSW Snowy mountains. The Chardonnay vineyard has two different clones (I10V1 & P58) and is a vineyard of exceptional pedigree. This vineyard has produced wines that have won multiple gold medals at local and capital city wine shows over the years. When the opportunity arose to take the fruit from this vineyard in late 2019, it was too good to refuse. Unfortunately the bushfires of 2020 delayed our first intake to 2021 but the resultant wine is worth the wait. Above average spring rainfall coupled with cooler temperatures delayed budburst and lowered yields. Rain in February prolonged ripening and retained acidity, producing small amounts of high quality Chardonnay with great purity and finesse.
Food Pairing
Seafood to light meats.
Production
Whole bunch pressing, natural ferment in 100% French oak have come together in spectacular fashion. The wine was fermented in 30% new French oak and the balance older, from a variety of cooperages.
Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
