2020 Rosato

2020 Rosato

Hunter Valley, NSW

The colour is a very appealing coral pink. Shiraz has a lifted red spice element to its aroma and this dominates with an almost rose water background. The palate has vibrant red fruits and a dry finish, and while technically a red wine, has plenty of zesty acid. A wine to be enjoyed over the next year or so.

Vinification
There are quite a number of methods of making Rosato including juice run-off the red grapes or blending but for this wine we immediately pressed the grapes to tank. A small amount was fermented in old oak but the majority in stainless steel tank. Bottled in early April 2020.
Winemaker Comments
Brokenwood’s 6th make of Rosé is something different. Due to the bushfires in Eastern Australia we were unable to harvest our usual Nebbiolo form the Indigo Vineyard. Instead, we picked a small parcel of young vine Shiraz from the Graveyard and Tallawanta Vineyards in the Hunter Valley. It is made in a European Rosato style, Italian for Rose, where the wine has fruit sweetness but a dry finish. The actual residual sugar is zero. We wanted to make a savoury wine that could withstand being chilled and have plenty of florals and texture on the palate.
Food Pairing
Rosato is best served chilled and suited to antipasti and grissini - the metre long bread sticks. Foie Gras wouldn’t go astray either.
Drink
Best consumed over the medium term.
