2019 Tempranillo

2019 Tempranillo

Beechworth, VIC

As this is only our fourth crop of Tempranillo, a lot of effort went into maintaining the bright fruit characters. Processing involved a short cold soak, then a 4 day fermentation with hand plunging. Bottled after 6 months in french oak, the colour is deep red with lifted red berry and red jube fruit aromas carry to the palate with a low acid and soft tannin finish. Sweet, earthy and dark cherry flavours. An easy drinking wine to enjoy with friends or at a Sunday BBQ

Wine Profile
Sufficient winter rainfall in 2018 saw the vines off to a great bud burst. A cool, dry, early growing season saw the vines in good health and then 200mm of rain fell in early December. This resulted in great canopy growth which sheltered the vines during the heat spike in mid-January. Harvest progressed under clear blue skies. The 2019 Hunter Valley vintage was the 3rd dry one in a row, matching 2005, 06 and 07. Perfect ripening and vintage conditions. The blend is 60% Beechworth.
Winemaker Comments
Tempranillo is one of the mainstay varietals of the Iberian Peninsula. It shares the red wine duties (and they’re often blended) with Grenache or Garnacha as it is called. Like all winemaking regions around the world, Spain and Portugal have a vibrant mix of young gung-ho artisan winemakers working alongside very traditional wine producing companies. The traditional style is matured in large Slovenian oak vats for many years before bottling, whereas the younger brigade strive for fruit freshness with the oak playing a supporting role. Some have adopted screw caps to maintain fruit clarity. The Brokenwood style is very much down this bright fruit path.
