Vibrant young colours and medium density. Very fragrant and appealing nose of red/maraschino cherry aromas. The background shows sweet oak, although the wine was not in any new barrels. Bright, savoury Sangiovese fruit on the palate with juicy acidity. Typical drying tannins and red spice/ginger notes with a great finish. Immensely enjoyable.

Processing started with 3-4 day cold soaking and then a 4-5 day ferment with hand plunging. The oak regime with this wine matured in older French oak with 30% puncheons.
Winemaker Comments
Brokenwood winemakers and crew don’t need too much encouragement to taste a range of world wine styles and one of our favourite countries is Italy. Add to this a progression of young winemakers from Italy over the years espousing the qualities of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo; it is not surprising to see these varieties under the Brokenwood label. Sufficient winter rainfall in 2018 saw the vines off to a great bud burst. A cool, dry, early growing season saw the vines in good health and then 200mm of rain fell in early December. This resulted in great canopy growth which sheltered the vines during the heat spike in mid-January. Harvest progressed under clear blue skies.

Pasta, of course, or a classic Australian BBQ.
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
