A perfect pale yellow colour, tinged with green. The fruit was picked at optimum ripeness to preserve the grapefruit and lemon pith aromas...and also to beat the heat! Low oak impact on the nose and palate but the hint of vanillin sweetness compliments the Chardonnay fruit. White stone fruit flavours that will build with bottle age. Great acid line and all up a very enjoyable Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes
A perfect pale yellow colour, tinged with green. The fruit was picked quite early to preserve the grapefruit and lemon pith aromas... and also to beat the heat! Low oak impact on the nose and palate but the hint of vanillin sweetness compliments the Chardonnay fruit. Tropical flavours that will build with bottle age. Great acid line and all up a very enjoyable Hunter Valley Single Vineyard Chardonnay.
Vineyard Notes
The Maxwell Vineyard was planted in the early 70s and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years. We get many enquiries about our Graveyard Vineyard Chardonnay, last made in 2004, so we thought it time to return to a Hunter Chardonnay.
Vinification
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and then loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approximately 30% new oak and bottled in December 2018.
Winemaker Comments
The Hunter Valley enjoyed another stress free (but hot) vintage in 2018. Low rainfall through most of winter 2017. Only 20mm in July/August/September but then a wet spring with 100mm and 90mm in October and November respectively. Temperatures started to ramp up from mid-December with 10 days over 35C and a few over 40C. This continued into January and February 2018. The Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay grapes were picked on January 11th.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pork and rich Asian dishes.
Drink
Drinking well now and will evolve further over the medium term.
