2019 Forest Edge Vineyard Chardonnay

2019 Forest Edge Vineyard Chardonnay

Orange, NSW

95 Points - The Real Review
94 Points - 2021 Halliday Wine Companion

A very attractive colour of pale yellow/green. Stylistically finer and more restrained than the Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay. This wine has lifted grapefruit and ripe pear aromas. The palate, while complex, has a ‘lightness’ and perfect balance of cashew fruit, oak and citrus. Definitely a wine for long term aging, if desire to enjoy now can be waylaid.

Wine Profile
Whole bunch pressing, wild ferments in new French oak have come together in spectacular fashion. The wine was fermented in 35% new French oak and the balance older, from a variety of cooperages.
Winemaker Comments
The Orange district is widely recognised as one of Australia’s premium cool climate regions. Rob Crawford established the ‘Forest Edge’ Vineyard in 1988. Vintage 2017 is Brokenwood’s 18th year of handling fruit from the Forest Edge Vineyard. A cold and reasonably dry winter in 2018. April to September rain was just over 200mm and lots of sub zero degree nights. Mild spring days and a very useful 133mm in November set up the vineyards nicely. Another very warm January with only 5 days below 30C but at least some rain along the way. The grapes for this wine were picked on 5th March 2019. A welcome return as Brokenwood did not release any Forest Edge wines from 2018 due a grass fire near the vineyard.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with seafood and veal dishes.
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
