SUSTAINABILITY

We have a motto here at Brokenwood Wines to Make Great Wine and Have Fun but we are also committed to doing it in the most environmentally sustainable way possible. We strive to balance our economic and operational requirements with our social responsibilities to minimise our impact on the environment and surrounding community. Continual monitoring and improvement in environmental performance are key elements of our commitment to social responsibility and sustainability and we have implemented the following initiatives in order to integrate these principles into relevant business practices and to further enhance the quality of our wines.

AUSTRALIAN PACKAGING COVENANT

Brokenwood Wines has been a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant (APCO) since 2010, which aims to increase awareness around sustainable packaging design, recycling and re-use in order to reduce packaging waste and divert it from ending up in landfill. As a signatory we have committed to reducing the environmental effects of packaging and report annually to APCO on our activities and improvements, click to view our current Action Plan 2019 and Performance Summary Report 2019.

NEW PROJECTS

1. 99kW Solar PV System-Todae Solar
As part of our commitment to reducing our energy consumption & contributing to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future, Brokenwood Wines decided to invest in renewable energy in the form of a 99kW Solar PV System. The installation is aimed at considerably reducing our greenhouse gas emissions whilst generating significant electricity savings year on year. The system layout has been designed to maximise efficiency and will be commissioned in February 2020. Image: Todae Solar

2. LED Lighting
Installation of LED Lighting across the entire site is estimated to produce savings of up to 70% of our entire lighting bill. The install was completed in December 2019.

3.Cardboard Shredder/ Perforator
In order to re-purpose used cardboard on site we have purchased a Cardboard shredder/perforator to replace soft plastic use (bubble wrap) in our packaging as part of the NSW EPA Bin Trim Rebate Program. The shredded/perforated cardboard can also be used as mulch on gardens and in the Vineyard to prevent under vine weed growth and moisture loss.
