A slightly deeper colour than the previous vintages due to an excellent McLaren Vale harvest. Lifted brown spice aromas and background char from the oak maturation. The palate has an abundance of black fruit pastille and forest notes. A touch riper as well but certainly not over the top. Ripe dusty tannins that will see this wine in good stead over the next 10 years or so.
Combination open and roto red fermenters, 80% French oak of which 30% new, balance 1-2 year old, 20% older American, in oak 18 months.
Normality was restored with the weather for the southern states and the only glitch for 2012 was the low crops. In fact overall tonnes in McLaren Vale were down by 30% on 2011. As such the wines definitely have ‘power’. For the Hunter Valley, the winter of 2011 saw more consistent rain than previous years with each month from April 2011 getting above 60mm and June just on 120mm. Rain in the last 3 months was 310mm so quite a wet spring and start to the growing season. Unlike 2010 it was spread out and we were able to keep up the spray program. Warm, dry weather followed through Xmas and into the New Year but sadly once the rain started on 27th January, it didn’t let up. A major effort in the vineyard did mean we picked 70t of Shiraz.
Lamb, veal and pasta.
Enjoy now or over the next 5-10 years.
