2016 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz

2016 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz

McLaren Vale, SA

An excellent densely coloured Shiraz typical of the McLaren Vale region. Lovely dark plum fruit and Christmas
cake aromas on the flavoursome, generous palate. A rich palate with ripe soft tannins and some vanillin oak on the finish. A classic McLaren Vale Shiraz to enjoy over the long term.

Wine Profile
Crushed and chilled to tanker in McLaren Vale and then in the Hunter Valley within 24 hours, open 3-4 tonne fermenters and hand plunged twice per day. Pressed to oak just before the end of fermentation. This wine has been matured in 100% French oak, and the largest parcel in a new 2,500 litre Francois cask.
Winemaker Comments
Previously made between 1993 and 2007, the Shiraz grapes for this wine are not from the 1950 plantings but from a block right next-door and planted in the early 1990s. A feature of the vineyard, which is just outside the town of McLaren Vale in South Australia, is the deep sand over clay soils. A very dry winter of 2015 had similarities to 2007 with less than 50% normal rainfall. The dry weather and heat continued through to early 2016 and a surprisingly large crop was then filled out by a storm at the beginning of February. The Rayner fruit was in superb condition.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with beef fillet and osso bucco.
Drinking well now in its youth but will develop into a lovely mature dry red over medium to long term cellaring.
