Brokenwood Wines

2014 Shiraz

2014 Shiraz

Hunter Valley, NSW

Lovely mid density colour, not light or black with purple hues. Dark cherry and now released as a young wine, some noticeble charry oak notes on the aroma. Brokenwood had the luxury of being highly selective across all its barrels in 2014 and this wine has benefitted greatly from some declassified old vine Graveyard Shiraz in the blend.

Full flavoured and slight Hunter Valley iodine characters and lots of ripe blackberry fruit. Sweet ripe tannins carry the flavour and bright acid finish. Again oak there but certainly fits the overall structure of the wine.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Part vinomatic and part open top 2-4 tonne fermenters. The latter plunged two times per day. Perfect grapes do not need a lot of input and after 7 days pressed off, with malolactic fermentation conducted in tank. The wine then went into 100% French oak made up of 25% puncheons and overall 25% new oak. The Shiraz grapes are source solely from the Graveyard Vineyard, being clonal vines planted through the 90s and massale selection from the 68 plantings, with the oldest nearing 10 years of age.
Winemaker Comments
Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick on the 8th of January. Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme went through the valley, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. Lower crop and low foliage equals early picking except vintage 2014 was not too dissimilar to 2000 except 2014 had perfectly ripe tannins at much lower sugar. An effortless vintage for the winemakers.
