2014 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

2014 Maxwell Vineyard Chardonnay

Hunter Valley, NSW

From a warm year giving a yellow/green colour. Hunter Valley Chardonnay usually has peach, mango aromas. The oak component is subtle with some bran meal lift and these characters also appear on the palate with rich tropical flavours. The wild ferment and lees stirring giving a lovely texture to the wine. Long finish.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Harvested all by hand, the fruit was chilled overnight and then loaded to the press as whole bunches. Press and run to barrels for wild yeast ferment. Approx. 30% new oak and bottled in January 2015.
Winemaker Comments
Winemaker Iain Riggs made the comment during vintage 2014 that he thought in 32 years there were no more surprises left. Except of course starting to pick on the 8th of January. Once upon a time, before the private irrigation scheme went through the valley, some Shiraz was picked in late January but Semillon was always early February. Not so any more. The winter and the spring of 2013 were very dry, in fact 207mm in the last 5 months of the year. The Maxwell vineyard was planted in the early 70s and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years. We get many enquiries about our Graveyard Vineyard Chardonnay, last made in 2004, so we thought it time to return to a Hunter Chardonnay.
Food Pairing
Rich Asian food and pork.
Drink
Drinking well now and will evolve over the medium term.
