After the trials and tribulations of the 2008 Hunter vintage, it is a very pleasant task to discuss the 2006 wines. But first 2008! Although difficult, 2008 will see some very good wines go to bottle, mainly whites. Brokenwood will not be releasing a Graveyard Shiraz and will have a close look at whether even a Hunter Valley Shiraz is possible.
Some say it has been the worst vintage ever. It was my 26th here in the Hunter Valley and the very wet 1984 and the drought-rain vintage of 1992 spring to mind as pretty tough going. If ’08 and ’92 are compared, we did at least pick reds off the Graveyard in ’08. In ’92 not a berry was picked thanks to two years drought and then 250mm of rain just before picking.
In 2006 the Hunter Valley - and indeed Australia - had great vintage conditions. 2006 in the Hunter was the middle year of a set of three dry years, not unlike 1985 to 1987. The Hunter, Beechworth and McLaren Vale weren’t affected by water restrictions, so full bodied whites and deep coloured reds are the order of the day.
Enjoy!
Cheers,
Iain Riggs
